Convocation of The College of Cardinals To Select New Pope Announced.
THE FOLLOWING BRIEF STATEMENT WAS POSTED TODAY TO THE VATICAN’S OFFICIAL WEBSITE.
“Today, 1 March 2013, the first day of the Sede Vacante, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, Dean of the College of Cardinals, has summoned the cardinals to the first General Congregation, as provided for by the Apostolic Constitution “Universi dominici gregis“.
This first General Congregation will take place on Monday, 4 March, at 9:30am in the Paul VI Aula, Synod of Bishops’hall. A second General Congregation is also scheduled for 5:00pm in the same place.”
The convocation was made necessary by the recent resignation of Pope Benedict XVI which became official yesterday. Pope Benedict thus became the first pope to resign in almost 600 years. Recent speculation has it that this convocation may lead to the naming of the first pope from Africa or Latin America.
